Porsche Unveils 991-Based GT3 Cup Racer

When you have a brand-new model in your showrooms, it doesn’t really make sense to have participants run your own one-make series with an older generation car. Even more so if you are Porsche and the car in question is the 911 that takes part in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup.

Well, that’s stretching the truth a bit: the racers aren’t based on the base 911 Carrera or Carrera S but the hardcore GT3 – hence the GT3 Cup moniker for the model that the company claims is the most successful racing car ever, having sold 2,385 units since 1998.

With the seventh generation 911, code-named 991, been on the roads for more than a year now, it was about time the Stuttgart automaker rolled out its successor. That happened yesterday during the “Night of Champions” event at the brand's R&D center in Weissach.

The all-new 911 GT3 Cup is powered by a 3.8-liter flat-six with 453HP (460PS), 10HP more than the 997 GT3 RS-based model it replaces, delivered 1,000 rpm lower, at 7,500. Power is directed to the rear wheels via a six-speed dog-type gearbox developed by Porsche Motorsport that, for the first time in a Porsche Cup car, is operated by paddle shifters.

Camouflaged prototypes of the road-going GT3 have already been spotted with a PDK dual-clutch semi-auto so, pending further information from Porsche, it’s possible that the dog-clutch transmission has been exclusively developed for the Cup version.

The racer’s single-piece race wheels have a center mount and they are wrapped in Michelin slicks that measure 27 cm at the front and 31 cm at the rear, making them 20 and 10 mm wider respectively than the 997-based GT3.

The new GT3 Cup also features a new race braking system, with 380 mm slotted and inner-vented steel front rotors and six- and four-piston calipers front and rear respectively.

“The new 911 GT3 Cup is much easier to drive at the limit”, said works driver Timo Bernhard, who was significantly involved in the car’s development. “It is excellently balanced. The new axle geometry is enormously positive for the handling. Apart from that the new Cup 911 is great fun to drive.”

Safety is crucial in any racing series, so the 991 GT3 Cup is fitted with a new safety cage that offers better protection in the event of a collision, a new racing seat that wraps around the driver’s head and shoulders and can be adjusted with the help of padding. Last but not least, there's a rescue hatch in the roof to provide easy access to medical staff and make extracting the driver easier after an accident.

Like its predecessor, the GT3 Cup is assembled at Porsche’s Zuffenhausen plant in Stuttgart alongside the road-going models. It then gets its set-up for the circuit and a test drive by a professional race driver at the Motorsport Center in Weissach before being delivered to customers.

The latter will have to shell out €181,200 (US$234,250) excluding country-specific taxes and they can have it in any color they like, as long as it’s white.

You can watch a video of the new 911 GT3 Cup right after the jump.

New Photos and Videos of Redesigned 2013 Kia K7 Sedan

When Kia first announced the facelifted 2013 K7 sedan (named Cadenza in markets outside Korea) at the end of October, we only got a pair of pictures showing the front- and rear-quarters of the mid-size model.

We don't know if the K7 piqued your curiosity, but if it did, we may be able to help as we have a new set of pictures, which this time, include the interior, along with several videos.

Besides incorporating Kia's evolving design DNA on the exterior and in particular, in the front and rear ends of the car, the new images reveal that the Koreans also updated the K7 / Cadenza's cabin that gains a restyled center console with new controls and a…sic…analogue watch positioned in the middle, as well as new instrument gauges.

In its home market of South Korea, the front-wheel drive K7 is offered with a choice of three gasoline units, including a 198hp (201PS) 2.4-liter inline-four, a 266hp (270PS) 3.0-liter V6 and a 290hp (294PS) 3.3-liter V6.

Kia officials have said that the K7 will make it to North America as the Cadenza sometime next year, where it will be positioned above the Optima and in due time, below the Quoris / K9.

Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 Roadster Officially Revealed, Priced at €300

As expected, Lamborghini today pulled the wraps off the open-top version of its Aventador LP700-4 supercar. The Aventador Roadster makes its U.S. debut in Miami, Florida, before its international premiere at the Los Angeles Auto Show at the end of the month.

The first addition to the hugely successful Aventador, which has already sold some 1,300 units since its introduction in summer of 2011, thankfully foregoes the annoyingly fiddly fabric cover of its Murcielago Roadster predecessor in favor of a lightweight, two-piece hard top made out of carbon fiber.

Just like other open-top supercars, including Ferrari’s 458 Spider and McLaren’s MP4-12C Spyder, the Aventador Roadster is actually more of a targa than an all-out roadster.

Unlike those models, though, the Lambo's roof is not electrically operated as it must be removed by hand. Lamborghini, however, claims that its design and low weight (less than 6 kg/13 pounds) make it easy to handle. When removed, it is stored in the front luggage compartment, while going topless or putting it back on is a matter of seconds.

Compared to the Coupe, the Roadster is distinguished by its redesigned rear pillar that supports the roof, features an automatic protection system for driver and passenger and allows ample ventilation for the mighty V12 engine.

The rear window can be raised or lowered at will and there is a wind deflector that reduces air turbulence and, like the roof, can be stored in the front luggage compartment when it’s not used.

The Roadster’s windows have chamfered edges in order to fit perfectly with the edges of the hard top. Moreover, its bodywork sports a two-tone paint, with the roof and the upper area up to the “fins” finished in gloss black.

The color palette has been increased by the addition of the new “Azzuro Thetis” light blue paint that, according to the company, harks back to the 1968 Miura Roadster. Finally, as far as the exterior is concerned, the Aventador Roadster is fitted with “Dione” forged alloy rims, which weigh 10 kg (22 pounds) less, and measure 20 and 21 inches in diameter front and rear respectively.

With the exception of the “Sabbia Nefertem” leather upholstery in the interior, the rest of the Roadster is identical to the Coupe.

Just to refresh your memory, this means a carbon fiber monocoque chassis with pushrod suspension and a mid-mounted, 700HP 6.5-liter normally aspirated V12 with a seven-speed semi-automatic, single-clutch transmission driving all four wheels. It also features the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions-reducing cylinder deactivation and auto stop/start systems that were introduced for the 2013MY cars.

According to Lamborghini, the Roadster accelerates from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 3.0 seconds, 0.1 slower than the Coupe, and tops out at 350 km/h (217 mph).

Lamborghini says the all-new Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster can be ordered in any country as of today at a starting price of €300,000 (US$381,500 at the current exchange rates) excluding taxes (U.S.-specific pricing will be announced within the next few weeks).
